Understanding CoCT Electricity Tariffs

We would like to provide you with a clear explanation of the City of Cape Town (CoCT) electricity tariffs, especially regarding the Lifeline Tariff and how it impacts your electricity usage.

What is the Lifeline Tariff?

The Lifeline Tariff is a special electricity rate for households that meet certain conditions. At Carnanda, the management has already applied for this tariff on your behalf, but it’s important to understand how it works and how it affects your monthly electricity usage and costs.

Eligibility for the Lifeline Tariff
  • Property Valuation: Your property must be valued at below R500,000.
  • Monthly Consumption: You must use less than 450 kWh per month on average over the last 12 months.
  • Prepaid Meter: You must have a prepaid electricity meter.
  • Lifeline Tariff Benefits: If you qualify, you can receive Free Basic Electricity.
How Much Free Basic Electricity Will You Get?
  • For usage under 250 kWh/month (on average over the last 12 months), you will receive 60 kWh of Free Basic Electricity each month.
  • For usage between 250 kWh and 450 kWh/month, you will receive 25 kWh of Free Basic Electricity each month.
How the Tariff Works
  1. Free Basic Energy:
    • The first 60 kWh (for those under 250 kWh usage) is free of charge.
    • For those using between 250 kWh and 450 kWh, the first 25 kWh is free.
  2. Additional Usage:
    • After the free electricity, the cost is 226.53 c/kWh + VAT
Important Points to Remember
  • Annual Review: Your electricity usage is reviewed every 12 months. If your average consumption exceeds 450 kWh per month during the review, you will automatically be moved to the Domestic Tariff in September and March.
  • Managing Your Usage: If you buy 600 kWh in a month, you’ll need to adjust your usage in other months to stay within the Lifeline Tariff and continue receiving the benefit of Free Basic Electricity.
